Having worked with the best, Trained and Assisted extensively with Paul Mckenna treating more conditions than listed on this site - Anxiety and Panic are often top of the list.  The techniques you will have seen used on Television to treat these types of conditions are exactly the techniques you will become familiar with in our Practice.

Panic Attacks

To suffer from panic attacks and anxiety is more common than most people realise. The important thing to begin understanding is how this has been created in the first place. The FEAR OF FEAR cycle is what keeps the panic attacks coming, without any understanding or treatment, this cycle can increase the symptoms and can cause the problem to worsen.

The cause:

You may have been stressed for a while; sometimes the stressors are no longer present, so consciously there is ‘nothing wrong’. The stressors have however, taken their toll on your mind set and your physiology has been altered. Whatever the cause, we can help you to retrain your mind so the panic attacks stop.

If you think about what has been happening in the last few weeks, months, even years you may begin to realise what is the underlying cause. If like many of us, you have been putting things to one side, unable to deal with them, under pressure, avoiding difficulties, anxious etc Sometimes the causes are obvious;

  • Divorce
  • Death of a loved one
  • Shocking experience
  • Redundancy

Some are less obvious but nonetheless worrying;

  • Marital problems
  • A job you don’t enjoy
  • Financial worries
  • Difficult or very young children
  • Being overwhelmed in life
  • Not enough time to relax

When you should become concerned about panic attacks?

You need to be aware of the need to seek treatment if there is a repetition of the panic attack, seemingly now triggered by a specific situation, place or thing e.g.

  • Driving
  • Work
  • Authoritative people
  • Underground travel
  • Any kind of travel
  • Public Speaking

The trouble is, you can sometimes find that whilst the initial panic attack occurred on the underground, that subsequent attacks have occurred in the supermarket or then in other public places. This is not a Phobia in the usual sense, it can be treated as such to remove the fear of further anxiety in this situation, it is also worth working out what those underlying causes are, and they won’t disappear just because you dealt with the effect (panic attack).

Panic disorder

This is usually diagnosed when more than two-four attacks have occurred and there is a significant feeling of fear that another will occur. Panic Disorder in itself is very unpleasant as the person affected, will often begin to change the way they live their life, this in turn will affect all those around the person affected. If it should continue without any treatment it can lead to Agoraphobic tendencies then to Agoraphobia, which is essentially a fear of living a normal life.

How to Get Help

Hypnotherapy ,TFT and NLP combined is the most effective treatment for Panic Attacks. Hypnotherapy alone is less likely to resolve the causes of Panic Attacks although some people have had relatively few sessions and have learned how to relax and feel more in control. Some have had Hypnotherapy to resolve the underlying causes which have led to an increase in Confidence and Self Worth plus a release of pent up emotions that can be a large contributory factor of Anxiety. Since we began using NLP techniques in our practise, the likelihood of a full and more rapid recovery has increased.

Panic Attacks Treatment

NLP is very useful in beginning to ‘reprogramme’ the way your mind has been working. It is important to remember that there is ‘nothing wrong with you, there is something wrong with the way you mind is currently programmed’. This can be changed using NLP techniques. An average number of sessions for this treatment to be effective is 2-5.

Case history  - Julia

Julia was a mother of two children and had worked all of her life. She had found that working and caring for her children was stressful and she felt overwhelmed at times with responsibility and guilt. At work one day, she found herself becoming very ‘aware’ of her surroundings and more importantly ‘aware of her heart beating’. The more aware she became, the more the anxiety increased. She felt hot, shaking and unable to speak to anyone for fear of breaking down into tears. She took herself off to the ladies to calm down. She had a small cry and felt more comfortable. She returned to her desk and was soon busy working, but as she said ‘she had fear in the back of her mind’, that the experience might be repeated. What had confused Julia, she had not been doing anything stressful at the time that the panic attack occurred. It therefore did not make any sense, this was alarming as without an explanation of the cause, she was even more fearful of a repeat.

This may be familiar to you, the ‘awareness’ of the symptoms without knowing the actual cause. This is where we look for an explanation that sometimes compounds the problem further.

Julia had another attack at work, this time it seemed to be triggered by preparations for a meeting where Julia would need to speak in front of others. Julia believed that the problem was caused by fear of public speaking. She researched the problem on the internet and found our website. Before Julia’s appointment, she had another attack, this time it was after dropping the kids off for school. Once again, she was not sure what the trigger had been, but it threw her belief that the cause was public speaking. She was on her way to work and that she decided was the common factor – work. She discussed with her husband the options, working part time was impossible financially, giving up work completely impossible, changing her job didn’t seem the answer and thinking of going for interviews simply stressed Julia further.

In Julia’s first session, we discussed the problem and how she saw it. I was able to explain what anxiety and panic are. I asked about Julia’s life and how she felt about working and the children. She broke down then and all the thoughts she had kept inside her own head came tumbling out. This was a session where the focus was on allowing Julia to understand the underlying causes of the stress she had been ignoring. Julia did not enjoy her work as much as she could, simply because she did not feel valued. She equally did not feel valued in the home and would not complain because guilt would prevent her. It came about that we agreed to work on the panic attacks first and then follow up with some assertiveness and self esteem work. Julia had two sessions working on panic attacks, then a further two working on confidence. She wrote to me a few months ago, two years after the treatment. She wanted to let me know that she had just had a promotion and that her life had continued to get better and better. She mentioned she had referred many people for therapy of their own, but was never sure if they had taken her advice. Hence, the reason for this website, to explain before the initial consultation, to increase confidence in your therapist and the treatment that will be offered.
