Depression What is depression? Many people, who have never suffered from depression, will have an understanding that it involves feeling low and expressing (inwardly and outwardly) lots of negatives (looking at life with a glass half empty attitude). However, unless you have suffered from depression, it can be difficult to truly appreciate the mind-set that you adopt when you become overwhelmed. Symptoms include:
How do we treat depression? We have worked with many individuals who have depression ranging from long term chronic depression to periods of frustrating ‘downess’ that is hard to shake off. We have heard from many of our clients that they do not feel confident that medication will work, either due to previous experiences, suggestions from their GP, or comments from others. We do not interject where a medical practitioner has given guidance but will advise if necessary that an individual seek a medical practitioners assessment. We understand that depression is a pattern of negative thinking caused mainly by self esteem being lowered or beliefs impounded very early in life, that suggest one is just not worthy or good enough etc. These underlying beliefs hide beneath the surface almost waiting for an opportunity to be proven correct. An example will help: June believed that life was ‘okay’ until her husband had an affair. June was diagnosed with Reactive Depression. Whilst exploring the effect of her husband’s affair on her self esteem, June realised that she had never thought particularly highly of herself and this experience was almost expected. She recognised many behavioural problems on her own part as well as expressing her anger and hurt about her husband’s betrayal. Junes sessions took a turn in the right direction, to correct the negative thinking that lead to depression and the symptoms of depression, to increase her own self esteem and self confidence and to teach her to ‘love herself’ first. June was able to then deal rationally with the affair, taking responsibility for her rejection of her husband. The outcome was that she chose to forgive him, release the pain from her past, to start living in the now and look forward to a brighter future. Techniques The treatments we will use to combat depression include: NLP for confidence and self belief and changing some behaviours; Analytical Hypnotherapy to resolve and release historical issues then create new purposeful beliefs that suit the individuals personal philosophy; psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy to change behaviours and understand cause and effect. We do not always need to use the whole range of techniques, however having those at our disposal is important. How many sessions are required to treat depression? The number of sessions is usually more for longer term depression, however our average is 4 – 6. |
